Someone I once knew built an identity around her astrological sign. This endeavor included filling social media with its virtues and powers. It was well intentioned, though often performative. After we parted ways, I learned she had slipped into questionable situations. Like the cosmic posturing, it was a far cry from the carefully constructed image. It was sad to hear.

I hadn’t thought of her in years until I stood at midnight in the pitch black of Antelope Island, a dark sky park on the Great Salt Lake. The air there carries a sharp odor from the lake’s decaying matter. But that night I was looking upward, not around.

My guide pointed to Antares, a red supergiant destined to explode into a supernova, though not for ages to come. Known as the heart of the scorpion, it anchors the Scorpius constellation… often linked, however loosely, to Scorpio.

The eventual death of that heart and the faint smell of rot felt like a metaphor: misplaced trust, decomposition under facades, and endings we don’t see coming. The music in this program follows that theme.
